word document converted to tmp.file

i need help,
i had a word document (blahblah.doc) saved ONLY on my usb drive, not on my
computer and i was working on it when all of a sudden, a message appeared and
i was forced into converting the doc.file to tmp.file (temporary file)
without saving, nothing. something about "space"message, i dont know. the
orginal file is deleted off my usb and i only have the temporary file on my
usb and it looks like this: ~WRD0355.tmp
when i open the tmp. file on word, it shows very strange characters that
look like sqaure boxes.

is there a way to get the original back or change the temporary file back to
the orginal word document, or convert the strange characters?

I'm afraid there's not much hope of recovering anything from the .tmp - it's
only one part of the puzzle that used to be a file. and even if you did
you'd still have to pretty much start from scratch:-(

However, you've learned a valuable lesson the hard way. On today's systems &
software *never* _open from_ or _save to_ removable media. The technology
requires significantly more space than just the amount of room necessary for
storing the file in order to be able to modify it. Flash drives are nice for
toting stuff around, but always copy/move the file to the HD before editing,
move/copy them back when done.

If you were forced to save the file as a tmp file, then it will be on the
computer where you saved it, or elsewhere on your usb drive.

Plug your USB drive into the computer you were working on (must be the same
computer, because we do not know which place the file saved to).

If you use File>Open Recent. In Word, the tmp file should be listed there.
If it is, choose it, and it will open.

If you open the TMP file, make sure you do not have "Recover text from any
file" enabled in File>Open. That is an import filter that will produce
square boxes for content it can't decode such as pictures. It is looking
only for text. Use Recover Text From Any File as a last resort, to get back
the text when a file fails completely.

This might be one of those times. But try opening as a Word Document first
